5 Home Upgrades to Make Before the Fall
We all know it’s better to take care of things on your own terms. Whether or not you want to admit it, that doesn’t make it any less true. Dealing with a potential issue before it becomes an emergency is always preferred. With that in mind, here are 5 home upgrades to make before the fall.
- Air Leaks: The number one culprit for high heating bills throughout the fall and winter is tiny air leaks. They’re like small intruders weakening your heating system’s effectiveness without you even knowing. These may be hard to identify when it’s warm out, and too late to fix when you find them by accident in the colder temperatures. So do a thorough inspection of your house as best you can. Feel around the windows and doors to see if you can find any spots where air is coming through. If you do, then address them and move on.
- Smoke Detectors: Some people like to change their smoke detector batteries when they change their clocks for Daylight Savings Time. I prefer the fall/spring approach, mainly because the heating systems are kicking on in the fall and that’s when dangerous smoke and gases can be more prevalent. Take a few minutes and swap the old batteries for brand new ones so you can sleep easily knowing you’re covered.
- Roof and Gutters: Fall means a dangerous combo of rain and falling leaves. Do yourself a favor now and get your gutters and roof cleared of any debris and backup. That way the rainfall can roll right off like it’s supposed to.
- Fireplace: If you have a fireplace, now is a good time to schedule a cleaning. You’ll want to be firing up that bad boy on those colder fall and winter nights. Best to get it cleaned and checked now so you don’t find out any bad news when it may already be too late.
- HVAC Clean and Check: A yearly clean and check on your HVAC system should be a must for your annual household chores. Usually, they aren’t very expensive, but they are a great way to extend the life of your HVAC system. Better to pony up that cash than to replace the whole thing outright.
